Steel Protection - Case Study

Thames Water Call Centre - Swindon

Installation overview

The Thames Water Call centre in Swindon has 8 No fire escapes. The previously painted steelwork had peeled in places and was showing signs of oxidisation to the steel where water had penetrated under the coatings. The walking surfaces of the fire escapes were slippery when wet and did not conform with the current Disabled Discrimination Regulations (DDA).

Special considerations

As with any successful coating application adequate preparation is key. We therefore recommended that all of the existing coatings and rusting steel were removed by means of open grit blasting prior to the application of a decorative steel protection system. To achieve this each fire escape had to be fully encased in a sound proofed enclosure to protect the building, allow the call centre to remain operational and to retain the aggregate used during the blasting operation.

Why ERS was selected

The client wanted a contractor that could provide the full service without sub-letting to other contractors. The scaffolding was provided by “in house” contractors working closely with ERS and all works were sequenced and carried out without disruption to the clients operations.
